During l968 the Butler Cave Conservation Society was formed to allow entry to the system when the area surrounding the cave was purchased by persons unsympathetic to cavers. The BCCS opened an access road to the cave, posted all properties against trespassing, and securely locked the cave. Entrance to the cave is now limited to experienced cavers who desire to further research on this cave system.----NSS NEWS, November 1968.

SIGNING -IN
AT STARNES
During Labor Day weekend in 1954, four members of the Philadelphia Grotto on a tip from Joe Lawrence Investigated the stream feeding the 35-foot waterfall in Starnes Cave, Giles County. VA. Using traditional climbing methods, the group placed five pitons to gain the top of the waterfall, where they smoked their NSS numbers on the wall. They explored the entire section comprised of several levels besides the streambed.

ring of truth...
"Millions of years ago men lived in caves because they had to. Today, some people climb into the dark and damp chasms because they want to. It's when they can't climb out again the trouble begins."--Anon., ROANOKE TIMES. |
